The E28 BMW 5 series was a very popular patrol car with the UKs Police. It was the car that really put BMW on the Police car map. Forces that used the E28 included Hampshire, City of London, Thames Valley, Wiltshire, Fife, Grampian, Tayside and the Dumfries and Galloway Police.
Hampshire Constabulary have been using BMW cars since 1978 and have had the E12 525, E28 528i, E34 530i and 525i, E36 325 TDS, E46 330d, E53 X5 3.0d 4x4, E61 530d, E91 320d, F11 530d and the later F15 and F85 versions of the X5 SUV.
BMWs excellent build quality, coupled to its legendary performance and handling makes them ideal for Police use and as such they are now the UKs largest supplier of upper segment patrol cars for motorway and ANPR intercept duties.
Police specification E28s differed considerably from civilian models in that luxury items like sunroofs, electric windows, alloy wheels etc were discarded in favour of steel wheels, wind-up windows and bottom of the range interior fitments to help reduce costs
